Match Small CNC Lettering to the Font, Cutter Angle, and Real Depth

Small CNC text is limited by physical stroke width, cutter tip, V-angle, depth, runout, corner access, material, and finishing—not by screen zoom. Proof the smallest required characters at final size before approving the font or cutter.

Convert the Font Into Measurable Features

Evaluate the actual characters, not a generic alphabet. Counters in A, B, e, 6, and 8, tight joins, punctuation, accents, and closely spaced strokes often fail before overall letter height appears small. Include the longest word and the most difficult character pair in the physical proof.

Match Cutter Geometry to the Smallest Stroke

Relate cutter angle to width at depth. A wider included angle grows the cut width faster as Z increases; a very fine tip may reach detail but be more sensitive to damage, runout, and surface variation. Use the measured or documented tool geometry rather than the label in an old CAM library.

Protect Counters and Closely Spaced Letters

Convert text to final production geometry only after spelling and font approval, and retain an editable source. When outlines are created, inspect overlapping paths, tiny segments, open contours, and unnecessary nodes. A screen rendering can hide paths the cutter cannot follow cleanly. When stroke width changes across the board, rule out surface-height effects with Control V-Carving Depth When the Stock Is Not Flat before editing the font.

Control Depth Through Stock Preparation

Size the coupon at one-to-one physical scale. Engrave several controlled depth or size combinations while keeping material face, cutter, feed, spindle command, and cleanup constant. Do not zoom in to judge legibility; inspect from the distance and lighting the user will encounter.

When the smallest stroke is beyond the current cutter's measured reach, compare the required tip geometry with available CNC engraving cutters.

Use a Legibility Coupon at Final Size

Finishing can change the winner. Paint fill may bridge a small counter, sanding can remove a shallow serif, and a coating can reduce contrast. Complete the intended finish on the proof and compare both readability and edge integrity before approving the smallest text size.

Set an Evidence-Based Minimum Text Rule

Record font file or outlined artwork revision, physical height, narrowest surviving stroke, spacing, cutter identity, actual projection, depth, material, and finish. If a substitute font or cutter is used later, rerun the worst-case proof rather than assuming equivalent appearance.
